July 2013 Update

July 03, 2013

computer1Hello, Project>Login leaders, volunteers, and friends!

Our working groups are gearing up for the fall semester and we've been working hard here at Project>Login HQ! Here are a few recent highlights.

Toward the vision

Mike Dubyak and Jim Page penned an op-ed in the Portland Press Herald last weekend reiterating the need to expand Maine's computing and information technology workforce and the desire to do so with Maine-educated employees. In support of that vision, we're pleased to announce that Tyler Technologies and Thomas College have recently joined Project>Login to help us do just that.

Computing and IT jobs in Maine

We're pleased to announce our new Explore Jobs dashboard. We're now linked directly to the U.S. Department of Labor's job listings, position descriptions, and occupational outlooks, all filtered to include only Maine jobs and data. Currently, about 175 jobs are posted, with the DOL projecting 380 openings per year, and a total of 14,000 jobs in these occupations by 2020.

In our next-phase career awareness campaign, we'll be creating profiles and pathways for each computing and IT career group: analysts, developer/programmers, administrator/architects, support specialists, program/project managers, and more.

Events for coders, and those who are curious

We've been reaching out to uncover and promote events of interest to those who enjoy (or might enjoy) software development projects. Check our our listings.

The list is growing quickly, with hack nights in Bangor and Portland, maker faires (DIY science and technology festivals) in Lewiston and Camden, and a statewide conference on the state of IT in Maine in September. Feel free to send us relevant events so we may feature them.

Collaboration clearinghouse

Our collaboration hub for volunteers is up and running, with spaces for all of our working groups, as well as a general forum, open to the public, seeded with discussion topics about computing and info tech in Maine. You can read recent updates there, too. Please register and join us.

We're also gathering online resources there — academic programs, learning activities, and professional experiences — and will soon be providing opportunities to subscribe to notifications of our new discoveries. In the meantime, you can submit resources to be included in the clearinghouse.

Of course, please feel free to send me any questions you may have about Project>Login ... and enjoy the summer!

Jay Collier, program director
