One teacher's perspective of the Code.org 5-day summer workshop

August 16, 2021 · blog post by Jennifer Luck-Hill

This week I had the opportunity to participate in the Computer Science Discoveries 2021-2022 5-day summer workshop. I was lucky enough to receive a generous scholarship from Code.org to be able to attend. I was blown away by the facilitators, the content, and the deep dive into the curriculum. I take a lot of professional development and I can honestly say this was the best professional development I have taken in years. We were given time to reflect, process, and debrief both individually and as a group on every activity and lesson we explored. Every activity was meaningful and engaging and will be so helpful to me as I teach this content. We were able to collaborate with our peers to build community and a network of support. Even though I have little to no experience in computer science, I feel like I'm leaving with the skills and knowledge that I need so that I can confidently and immediately teach the Code.org curriculum. I am really looking forward to our training sessions throughout this year and I’m even more excited to dive into teaching CS to my students in a few weeks! I feel very supported by my Code.org team. They have been so responsive to any questions or feedback. There is really nothing I would change about the training. It was an incredible experience, and I felt valued, supported, and respected every step of the way. I would absolutely recommend any teacher to get involved with Code.org, it will change the way you think about teaching. I love Code.org!
